Final Fantasy III VI is still my personal favorite Final Fantasy. I don't think I can explain how much of a technical masterpiece this game is, particularly in the context of when it was released. It was a mind blowing audio/visual experience that I think holds up better than the PS1 (maybe PS2?) games, and it had a narrative way more complex than anything happening on consoles at the time.
I remember after playing Final Fantasy II IV, I would scour every game magazine I could for details on the "sequel". The release day finally came and I somehow got my parents to spend EIGHTY DOLLARS, in 1994, on a single video game. Those 24-megabit cartridge prices were no joke. I still have the thing kickin' around thirty years later, so maybe it was worth it.
